The deadlift is a powerful training tool for developing muscle, strength and athleticism that translates outside the gym. If you want to grow a great backside, if you want to be able to express more power, if you want better posture…the deadlift is an awesome . However, its potency can also make it problematic if not respected. Both Camille, and I as well as many of our athletes have experienced major injuries from deadlifting. Yet, many of these injuries could’ve been avoided by respecting a few simple rules.

1) keep the technique tight. You only have so many shitty reps in the chamber before something that happens

2) make sure you are well recovered before deadlifting. It’s extremely taxing both on the central nervous system and musculature.

3) exercise selection is one of the most important things you can pay attention to as you get older. You have to pick movement variations that work for you. If Pulling off the floor is problematic, you can always do a rack pulls or trap bar deadlift with the same level of benefit.
