Bamidbar “In the wilderness”
Numbers 1:14:20

This week’s parsha, the first of the book of Numbers, begins with Elohim instructing Moses to take a census of the people, counting the men between the age of 20 and 60, those who could serve as soldiers in Israel’s army. However it is more than just counting as the Hebrew word ‘nasa’ (H5375) means to lift up; the men counted are lifted up in service to Yah. The tribe of Levi, whose duties are exclusively the service of the Tabernacle are counted separately, as they replaced the firstborns of each family who would have been dedicated to serve YHVH had it not been for the sin of the Golden Calf. The number of people, firstborns, who did not have a Levite to be their replacement were commanded to pay a ransom of five shekels for their redemption.

Between camps, the Levites disassemble and reassemble the Tabernacle, pitching their tents around it. The sons of Kohath (the Levites who bore the Ark and the other furniture) camped on the south side of the Tabernacle, the Gershonites (roof and tapestry work) camped to the west, the sons of Merari (wall panels and pillars) camped to the north and finally on the eastside, before the entrance, Moses, Aaron and Aaron’s sons pitched their tents.

The rest of the camp, the other tribes, are divided into four groups of three tribes. In the east are Judah, Issachar and Zebulun; in the south are Reuben, Simeon and Gad, to the west are Ephraim, Manasseh and Benjamin and in the north are Dan, Asher and Naphtali. When the numbers of people belonging to each tribe are counted and added with the population totals of the other two tribes in their group , it becomes evident that if viewed from above the camp’s divisions resemble the shape of a cross (the ‘tav’, the sign of the covenant) with the Tabernacle (God’s dwelling place) at the centre, the heart of the camp.
