Presenters:

Aaron Kraut, MD
Amer Z. Aldeen, MD

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

describe the methodology and interpret the results of the EM Workforce Study
discuss changes in the EM employment landscape since the EM Workforce Study was completed
develop a more accurate assessment of individual employment prospects

In early 2021, Annals of Emergency Medicine published The Emergency Medicine Physician Workforce: Projections for 2030, which sounded the alarm about a projected surplus of emergency physicians in the next decade. The fervent discussion that followed touched the entire breadth of our community from medical students now perhaps reconsidering a career in emergency medicine (EM), to residents agonizing over limited future job prospects, to senior leaders in EM, debating large scale solutions to address the perceived crisis. The contents of the report aren’t all doom and gloom, however. In order to best assess the implications of the workforce report, stakeholders must first understand both the outcome measures and limitations of the modeling utilized to generate them. This interactive discussion will break down the assumptions applied in constructing the workforce study model and review recent changes in the job market landscape to arrive at a more updated picture of the state of the job market.
