This is the story of how a band of German mercenaries ran an Italywide protection racket, always selling their services to the highest bidders and eventually entering the pay of a Hungarian king to invade southern Italy. Founded and led by the infamous Werner of Urslingen, the selfproclaimed “enemy of god”, the German Great Company was one of the most soughtafter, feared, and admired mercenary companies of renaissance Italy.
