Kikuchi Gorge in northern Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan is a remnant wild community focused around the pristine waters of the Kikuchi River. The stream side forest and adjacent hills have been left in their primeval state and are home to a dizzying array of plants. One group of plants common to the gorge, especially near the river, are epiphytes plants that grow on other plants. While mosses and ferns dominate the epiphytic community here, others like clubmosses and orchids can be found as well. This video shows many of the common epiphytes of the gorge. The day it was taken was rainy and cool and at the peak of fall leaf color the main draw for most people this time of year.
