The Battle of Plymouth unfolded amidst the First AngloDutch War on 16 August 1652, when GeneralatSea George Ayscue of the Commonwealth of England confronted ViceCommodore Michiel de Ruyter's Dutch Republic convoy. They clashed off the coast of Sussex. Ayscue, commanding a fleet of 47 vessels, aimed to intercept the convoy, but De Ruyter, leading 31 ships, skillfully maneuvered, forcing Ayscue's avoidance.
