Dibrugarh (Assamese: ডিব্ৰুগড়), is one of the oldest town of North East India in the state of Assam in India & well known as the Tea City of India. It is said that Dibrugarh is the first city in Northeast India to have introduced city bus service around 1956 in the Marwari Barbari rout with a fleet of five buses. Later it was extended from Dibrugarh University to the Assam Medical College & Hospital. Assam Medical College (Assamese: অসম চিকিৎসা মহাবিদ্যালয়)is the first medical college in northeastern India. It is the tertiary medical referral centre for upper Assam and areas in neighbouring states. The BerryWhite School of Medicine was established in Dibrugarh in 1900 using a donation of 50,000 rupees from Doctor John BerryWhite who had retired as the civil surgeon of Lakhimpur district and returned to London, where he died in 1896. In 1910 the college imported two xray machines from England, which were the first in India, and opened the country's first radiology department. After World War Two the college moved to nearby hospital premises that had been used by the US Army. On November 3, 1947 the college was formally renamed to become Assam Medical College.
