The History of Egypt (2/5): Foreign invasion and civil war

Follow
Cartoon History

In this video, we chart events from around 2200BC to 1600BC.

During this period, there is a succession crisis and famine, which prompts regional governors to establish renegade power bases and even declare independence. Eventually civil war breaks out between the Thebes in the south and Herakleopolis in the north.

Not coincidentally, this is also a period in which innovations in religious doctrine revolutionise access to the afterlife and paradise itself no longer the sole domain of the Pharaoh, now every subject of Ancient Egypt may enjoy an immortal life. Here concepts of original sin, hell, resurrection and a final judgement before god are originally established, and will go one to dominate judeochristian beliefs for millenia.

We also discuss the 12th Dynasty in Egypt a ruthless and terroristic nation state that uses propaganda and violence to ensure totalitarian Pharaonic rule. And finally, a second break down in central control, invasion by foreign powers and the near collapse of Egyptian civilisation.

I hope you enjoy the video.
