This video presents the history of Manchuria from 10,000 BCE to 2021 CE. It showcases historical cultures and tribes as well as states and their leaders, classified according to language family.

Nonstate societies which had their own ethnic identity or were prescribed one by outside actors are classified as tribal societies, while others are classified as cultures.

Major minority groups within the territories of premodern states and nomadic empires are shown. In such cases, boundaries of the dominant state are marked by thick outlines.

Entities are labeled on the map with their most wellknown name, but shown on the key by their official names, with reconstructed contemporary pronunciation where possible. The reconstructed names of those who left no records of their own are based on Chinese records.

Note: this periodization is purely for viewing convenience and is not endorsed by mainstream academia. I divided up the eras as follows:

Prehistoric Manchuria (10000 BCE to 701 BCE): the era before state formation in Manchuria.
Ancient Manchuria (700 BCE to 109 BCE): begins and ends with the rise and fall of Gojoseon, the first known state in Manchuria.
Classical Manchuria (108 BCE to 668 CE): begins with the fall of Gojoseon and ends with the fall of Goguryeo, marking the end of singular Koreanic dominance in Manchuria.
Early Medieval Manchuria (669 to 925): corresponds to the time of Balhae, the Goguryeo successor state that also had a significant Tungusic component.
Late Medieval Manchuria (926 to 1386): an era characterized by the dominance of nomadic peoples, namely the Khitans, Jurchens, and Mongols.
Early Modern Manchuria (1387 to 1911): the era in which Manchuria was inhabited by a number of diverse peoples.
Modern Manchuria (1912 to present): Manchuria since the Xinhai Revolution.
