Assyria emerged as a loose collection of cities in northern Mesopotamia c. 2600 BCE. It was initially said to have been ruled by 'Kings who lived in tents' until c. 2000 BCE, followed by 'Kings who were ancestors' and 'Kings whoose eponyms are destroyed' until 1906 BCE. Thereafter it entered the Old Assyrian Period until 1806 BCE, when the region was finally united under ShamshiAdad, founding an empire to last for over 1000 years.
