Human settlement in the region which would be known as West Africa began in the fifth millennium; encouraged by the lush steppes and savannahs. Their, sedentary farming took hold and the first human population centers began in locations like Dhar Tichitt and Oualata. The demise of the Saharan grasslands, however, did not destroy the economy of the region and millet and sorghum continued to feed the rising population. Most importantly, however, the iron trade allowed for TransSaharan connections to be made and from their civilizations were born.
