The International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) computation using Oasis montaj software

The International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) is a mathematical model that describes Earth's magnetic field and its variations over time. IGRF seeks to provide a standardized framework for representing and predicting the behaviour of the geomagnetic field at any location on Earth's surface and at different latitudes. The IGRF model is based on a combination of observations and mathematical calculations and is continuously updated to account for the everchanging Earth's magnetic field.
The application of the IGRF model is used in geophysics, geology, and other Earth sciences to analyse and interpret magnetic datasets to allow for the separation the regional magnetic field components from the local anomalies caused by geological structures or mineral deposits.
Oasis montaj software provides several algorithms to facilitate this process effectively. The software integrates the latest IGRF coefficients to ensure that accurate modelling of the Earth's magnetic field variations is properly accounted for. By selecting the appropriate IGRF model and specifying the geographic location, elevation, and time period, Oasis montaj calculates the expected magnetic field values based on the IGRF model parameters.
By subtracting the IGRF components from the observed magnetic field data, one can isolate the local magnetic field anomalies associated with geological structures or mineral deposit, enabling in the interpretation and mapping of subsurface geological features.
