We follow the journey of one of our drifting buoys as it travels across the world!

We maintain a fleet of active drifting buoys that travel great distances over many years, measuring sea surface temperature and atmospheric pressure.

These observations are fed into our supercomputers, and are an integral part of our forecasting and warning services. The data is also shared with other meteorological agencies around the world as part of a global ocean observing system.

This drifting buoy has been drifting since being deployed close to Heard Island off the coast of Fremantle in December 2014. It is currently located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile.
