Andrew ChiChih Yao, the very first Chinese Turing Award winner, is a computer scientist and computational theorist. He is well respected for proving what is now known as Yao's Principle, a way to prove lower bounds on the worstcase performance of randomized algorithms by comparing them to deterministic (nonrandom) algorithms. Prof. Yao is among the recipients of this year's Basic Science Lifetime Award at the ongoing second International Congress of Basic Science this week.
