The sudden death of the Kanoborn tyrant cast a dark shadow on the political future of the country, but sparked wide spread jubilation across the country.
He was buried on the same day, according to Islamic practice, without a formal autopsy.
This conduct has resulted in several hypotheses as to what may have caused General Sani Abacha's death.
