The Legend of Zelda: The Oracle of Seasons TAS Chapter 1

This is a ToolAssisted Speedrun. This run was made on an emulator, using framebyframe movements and rerecordings. It is not meant to show skill, but rather the game pushed to its limits, because it is purely a form of entertainment. There is no cheating, codes, hacks, or mods used to achieve this; it is all theoretically doable with a gameboy in your hands.

This will be the final version of the intro and first dungeon for this great Gameboy Color game. This game and its twin, the Oracle of Ages, are widely considered to be among the very best games ever released for the handheld, yet few TAS's have ever gotten past the first couple dungeons, due to how horrifically difficult the game is to manipulate; I'm merely the latest in a long string of people to attempt it. Stay tuned here to see if I really can go all the way!

This particular run is unique to the others in that it is a Linked Game Run. The two games were created with a system that once you beat one, you can take a given password across to the other and continue the adventure, though you of course lose most of your hearts and tools. I use a password based on the accidentally successful "NNNNN NNNNN NNNNN NNNNN" to start a linked, continuing run that will have Dmitri as my animal buddy, but he won't appear until after the second dungeon.

In this chapter, Link awakens in a strange land, and reaches into his pants to find his weapon already there. Skipping the intro dungeon (which is now an optional ultimate dungeon instead), Link gets right to work, challenging the first dungeon after a trip to town. From the version first fight with the skeletal Stalfos, I learned exactly how brutal this game is to TAS. Perseverence led me through to a rupeerich cart ride, and eventually the minibosses, conquered quickly with an improved strategy to earlier runs, thanks to their inspiration. After a week spent on the room with the boss key, I was finally satisfied to conquer the dragon, Aquamentus. By keeping the bombs instead of the sword, I was able to damage him before the music even started up. This saved much time despite going back to the item menu to pull out the sword and finish him off.
