Autumn Food for Thought series

We miss our students, alumni, colleagues, and friends – that’s why we’ve created a new occasion for us to come together once a week and discuss important current affairs, our latest research, and insights from industry leaders. Every session will start with a 15minute talk or interview, followed by 15minute live Q&A with you.

As you all know by now, we are changing our name to Bayes Business School in September. But who was the Reverend Thomas Bayes? What do we know about his person, his views, and his life? What is the story of his famous theorem, and how is that intertwined with Richard Price, another famous intellectual buried and in some ways the founding father of the field of actuarial science? We have the immense privilege of welcoming Prof David Bellhouse, the foremost expert and biographer of Thomas Bayes; hosted by our own Professor Steve Haberman.

Speakers:
Professor David Bellhouse, biographer of Thomas Bayes

David Bellhouse is the Professor Emeritus for the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences at the University of Western Ontario. He is an expert in the history of probability, statistics and actuarial science, survey sampling design and estimation and analysis of complex survey data. He has studied the life of Thomas Bayes in depth – and he is certain that the one picture that circulates of Bayes online is actually NOT his picture.

Hosted by Professor Steve Haberman

Steve Haberman is Professor of Actuarial Sciences at the Business School and was our Deputy Dean and then Dean from 2002 till 2015. He also worked on a parttime basis for about 20 years at the Government Actuary's Department in London. From March 2016 until January 2020, he was an Associate Director of the Actuarial Research Centre set up by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. David and Steve know of each other and have admired each other’s work for years, but this is the first time they will actually meet “in person.”
