THE LIFE OF QUEEN MARY I started out well, as Princess of England, heir to the throne and with two loving parents, Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Her world fell apart however, when her father became infatuated with Anne Boleyn and sought to annul his marriage to Catherine and declare his daughter illegitimate. In this Mary I documentary from History Calling, which is the seventh video in my Tudor monarchs’ series, we look at the early life of Mary I and at how this once happy child became a damaged Tudor princess and began down the road which would lead her to become not just the first Queen of England, but also Bloody Mary.

Extra information: This video will cover the childhood of Mary I and her early adulthood, including the relationships between Anne Boleyn and Mary Tudor, Henry VIII and Mary Tudor and Mary and Elizabeth Tudor. It will include the Princess’s reaction to her parents’ divorce/annulment, aka The King’s Great Matter and her time as a servant in the household of her baby halfsister, Princess Elizabeth. We will also look at topics including Mary I and religion (she was an ardent Catholic) and at the interactions between Mary I and her Spanish family, including her cousin Charles V of Spain, the Holy Roman Emperor, whom she relied on to protect her from her father’s wrath. Other historical figures who will be discussed include the Imperial ambassador Eustace Chapuys and Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury.
