The Long Strange Broken Road (distorted/cinematic live piece)

Follow
The Digital Lost

This is another piece, recorded live, to use this time of lockdown and isolation somewhat creatively.

An upbeat melody is backed, and then consumed, by an ever growing and distorting background drone. By the end, things have broken up, clanging and crashing, but maybe with a calming and clear wind in the background. Like the final moment during a time of chaos. When the mind is cleared and a decision is made: a life out on control, the end of a bad relationship, dealing with a broken spaceship aimlessly drifting through space, or even a world in chaos.

(As always, please listen to through decent headphones or speakers.)

This was recorded early morning. It was dark and very quiet outside. It's so quiet lately, it's eerie. I had a lot of coffee and CBD in my system. I felt a weird mix of clear and distorted thoughts, so maybe that comes out in this piece of music. I don't know.

Kind of like the world at the moment?

Usually I like to get out and film some video to accompany my music, but that can't really happen so much currently, so it's another overhead piece.

The main melody comes courtesy of the Yamaha Reface CS being run through the EHX Canyon Delay. Background droning is from the Modal Skulpt using its own distortion and delay. This then gives way to the cheap and crappy Midiplus MiniEngine on strings. This junky little GM box can sound alright when run through the Digitech Polara Reverb set to reverse. I genuinely like the swells that bloom. (But damn I wish I could turn off the 2nd midi channel...ah well.) This then ends up going through the Aural Dream Breath delay set to Ghost mode. This delay pedal is nuts, especially in said Ghost mode. Its self oscillates and distorts violently just by looking at it, it seems. I barely have the repeats at halfway and it's feeding back almost beyond control. (as a side note, this pedal had been picking up local radio for a little while, but the problem seems to be gone for now.)

Valhalla Room reverb was poured over the entire piece. Not too heavily, but certainly more than enough to bring everything together.

Everything sequenced and performed with the Novation Circuit.

Of course, questions and comments are welcome below.
