Hello peeps in this video we visited Ephesus, one of the most visited places in Turkey, now during low winter season and with covid19 around there was absolutely no tourists and we had the place just to ourselves so we had the time to appreciate and understand this magnificent ancient city, but what is Ephesus?
We will explain it very briefly as the history is long and complex:
Ephesus was a city port founded by the greeks, (the whole coast of todays Turkey was in fact part of ancient Greece during the Classical Greek Era), in the 10th century BCE.
In 129 BCE the Roman Empire took over the city and because of this most of what we see in Ephesus today is from the Roman era.
The city of Ephesus was once considered the most important Greek city, the most important trading center in the Mediterranean region and one of the richest cities, Ephesus made all its money from trade and with advanced building knowledge they built one of the greatest cities in the world that still "stands" today (some of it anyway).
Around the 15th century AD Ephesus was abandoned and the main reason for this was silt build up in the harbour, which eventually reached the point where no ship could reach the city, the city was also destroyed before this and since then was never the same and started to decline but even after nearly 3 millennia Ephesus left it's legacy to archaeologists, historians and the thousands of visitors to come to the region each year to see the ancient ruins.
Excavations started around the 18 hundreds and ONLY 15% of it has been excavated, meaning that the remain 85% is still underground, if with 15% revealed we were left speechless we can only imagine how magnificent Ephesus was once before if we had the chance to see it all.
