The lungs are organs which let you breathe!
They’re near the backbone, by the heart, which sits beneath!
The lungs’ bases sit on top of the diaphragm,
While the lungs’ apexes into the neck’s root cram!

Alveoli do, gas exchange wherein,
Carbon dioxide in the bloodstream is replaced with oxygen!

The respiratory system can be,
Partitioned in two divisions functionally,
Respiratory and conducting zones are shown!
And the nose, pharynx, larynx, bronchi, and bronchioles make up the conducting zone!

Gas exchange is in the respiratory zone of the lungs, where you’ll spy,
Respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveoli!

The respiratory system can be divided anatomically
Into the upper and the lower respiratory tracts, you see?
The left lung is smaller than the right, so the heart is not squeezed!
And fissures trace lobe boundaries!

The right lung has 3 lobes whereas,
The left has two that you can view!
On the left the lingula does sit!
A projection on the left lung’s upper lobe, and it!
Is now time to list the fissures, lit!

The main bronchi enter the lungs right at the hilum,
It’s on the mediastinal surface of the lung,
Primary bronchi, branch lobar bronchi!
Segmental bronchi,
These are the supply
For bronchopulmonary segments which all require their own arterial supply

Bronchi branch into little bronchioles, plus,
The lung’s functional unit is the primary lobule, also called the acinus!
