The Magic of Layering in Soft Pastel Vibrant Poppy Painting Tutorial

I'm glad you've joined me for this lesson where I hope many of you will learn about the magic of layering in soft pastel!

In this lesson, I teach you the concept of painting using layers much like planting a garden, and trying to envision your layers developing from the roots up.

Some things to keep in mind with layering:
1. Your surface will determine the amount of layering you get... about 45 with unsanded surfaces, and 59 with sanded pastel papers.
2. The more layers you add the more there is a chance to muddy your colors, so don't overdo it.
3. Dark to light we typically lay down darker values first gradually getting lighter as we layer. This depends on subject matter.
4. Final Marks your final spice marks or focal point marks need to be considered and preplanned. Therefore, don't "overlayer" where you may want to place a focal point flower or other element.
