The Monsal Trail Revisited A Famous Railway Walk in the Peak District

Follow
Nigel Harper

Ten years on, I'm once again walking the Monsal Trail (a disused Midland railway line) in the heart of Derbyshire's Peak District. It's an historic, and rewarding experience.
Magnificent rural scenery all around and when you reach Monsal Dale, with the once controversial Headstone Viaduct, it's just so evocative! Down in the valley along the River Wye is Millers dale, home of the infamous Litton Cotton Mill. Now it's luxury apartments, but in the 19th Century, a very different environment! I visit two trackside Lime Kilns either side of Millers Dale and on the way through Chee Dale and Wye Vale, with Topley Peak at journeys end.

Plans may be afoot to reinstate the trail and return it to a railway line??? But not any time soon!
