A large number of Finnish workers, Red Guards, socialists and socialist suspects fled after the Finnish Civil War across the eastern border to Murmansk, Russia.

There they were recruited into the British armed forces under a very special contract. The volunteer force was led by a Canadian colonel, and the task was to fight, together with the English, the French, the Italians, the Poles and the Serbs, the expansion of imperial Germany towards the Arctic Ocean.

Nen accustomed to northern conditions fought well against the White Finns.
