Debuting originally during CBS' coverage of Super Bowl X, this will always be, to me, the theme of "The NFL Today" on CBS. The name of this theme is "Horizontal Hold" by Jack Trombey (a.k.a. Jan Stoeckart) and is actually production music from the DeWolfe Music Library.

In the early 1980s, CBS remixed the theme to add synth elements before composing a brassier, edgier update of the theme altogether in 1983. A vaguely different, vaguely similar theme with hints of the original melody was used for the 1989 season before being dropped altogether in 1990. CBS brought back a remix of the 1983 theme for their final season of NFC coverage in 1993 and various remixes and updates carried over when CBS got NFL football back in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Here's my edit of how the theme was used on "The NFL Today" circa 1976. They never really used more than the first minute of the edit heard here, so I added a little bit of an end to it.
