The P-51 Mustang: The Australian Story

Follow
The Antique Airshow

Much has been recorded about the North American P51 Mustang. From it being designed in response to a RAF specification, to its ability and the significance of being able to escort long range bombing missions into the heart of Germany, to its excellent handling characteristics. However, perhaps lesser known is the Mustang’s extensive service with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and how Australia, a country that before 1936 had virtually no aircraft industry, became the only country outside of the United States of America to build the Mustang under license. The video will also cover the RAAF's usage of the P51 Mustang in the final days of the Second World War as well as in the postwar environment. The RAAF would send the P51 Mustang to Japan as part of the occupation force, and just as they were about to bring the final one's home, the outbreak of the Korean War would result in the RAAF deploying them over the Korean Peninsula. Here they would be utilized for escorting and ground attack missions.
