We have made the perfect matchstick ball! Actually, it is no that perfect. For this project, we used 9,386 toothpicks, or 234 boxes.

Now, a curiosity. Did you know that the chemical element phosphorus is not in the head of the matchstick? The match itself is on the sandpaper on the side of the box, and it serves to start the fire. At the tip of the matchstick, there is usually a fuel and an oxidizer. The first is what catches fire and, for that, there needs to be oxygen in the air.

But it is possible to facilitate the fire if we "give" oxygen in another way. In this case, on the matchstick, there is potassium chlorate, a substance with a lot of oxygen. And it is this oxygen that will be used in the fire. Then, the fuel present in the matchstick, which is usually sulfur or antimony trisulfide, will catch fire more easily, since there is also oxygen in the head of the toothpick itself.

Let's see the result? Ah, we have a surprise at the end!
