A commercial passenger airline's number one commodity is the seats on their planes. While some seats might need to remain unfilled for performance reasons on certain flights, airlines want to fill every seat on every departure with a farepaying passenger. This desire has even led to the practice of overbooking, with carriers betting on enough noshows and missed connections to balance things out.
