A few months ago, the arrival of M1 Abrams tanks on the battlefield instilled fear in Russian troops. When the US announced their deployment in December 2023, a wave of optimism soared across Ukraine. Nicknamed “The Beast” for their firepower and armor, these tanks were seen as a turning point, a weapon expected to tip the scales decisively in Ukraine’s favor.

This euphoria, however, proved shortlived. By April 2024, reports of mounting losses began to surface. The Donbas region, once a hopeful battleground for Ukraine, became a graveyard for these powerful machines. At least five Abrams destroyed in a single month, falling victim to a swarm of cheap, commercially produced Russian drones.

Faced with these sobering losses, Ukraine has been forced into a difficult decision: to withdraw its remaining Abrams tanks from the front lines. The US is scrambling for a solution, working alongside Ukraine to develop new tactics while the Abrams are out of commission.

This unexpected setback makes us wonder: how could these seemingly invincible machines fall prey to a lowtech threat? Could the real problem lie not with the Abrams themselves, but with the way they were deployed?
