Here is the update on cross 7 in our breeding project towards fixing a white guppy color strain. This continues our set of backcrosses using the offspring from our original four females. We are slowly making progress towards understanding how to fix a singlecolor trait and strain.
Our starting male has an allwhite phenotype (platinum White/snow white/white Moscow/Milky white strain), can we restore this trait through multiple generations by starting with only females that don’t have this trait? In this seventh cross we are face with a mystery as to why the females lack red pigment when most of Gandalfs original offspring are red.

Some Definitions:
Gene: Unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and may determine some characteristic of the offspring.
Allele: one of two or more alternative forms of a gene found at the same place on a chromosome.
Autosome: One of the numbered chromosomes, as opposed to the sex chromosomes.
Phenotype: the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment. This is the physical appearance of the fish in our context.
Genotype: The combinations of genetic codes that are responsible for the observable. Typically, two alleles (one from each parent) in the context of our guppies.
Homozygous: A guppy that has inherited two identical alleles for the same gene.
Heterozygous: A guppy that has inherited two different alleles for the same gene.
