In the 1980s, motorcycles symbolizes individuality, independence, and power. Until recently, American motorcycle manufacturers like HarleyDavidson held a near monopoly on the global market. When Japanese manufacturers finally did enter the cruiser bike market, they unleashed a deluge of new features and improvements.

Improvements in performance and dependability were made in the motorcycle industry as the 1960s gave way to the 1970s. The CB750 that Honda produced was widely considered to be one of the earliest superbikes, cementing the company's position as an industry pioneer. HarleyDavidson and the rest of the industry now face formidable competition as a result of Honda's success.

At the same time, a novel aesthetic movement began to take hold in the American niche market. The advent of films like Easy Rider played a role in inspiring this movement. Willie G. Davidson, a pivotal figure at HarleyDavidson, responded to this cultural shift by leading the company's launch of the FX 1200 Super Glide. Factorybuilt motorcycles like this one are widely credited with launching the modern custom motorcycle business.

The FX 1200 Super Glide was released by HarleyDavidson in 1971, and it was a motorbike that used preexisting core components together with additional embellishments taken from the custom scene. By taking this route, manufacturers like Harley and many others were able to develop their own distinctive factory motorcycle designs. Combining bespoke and production parts is a major design principle for HarleyDavidson and other motorcycle manufacturers.
