Lucina Qazi Uddin, PhD, UCLA Brain Research Institute, Los Angeles, CA, discusses recent research on the dorsal anterior insular, particularly its role in network coordination across different disorders and populations. Studies using fMRI data and different modeling approaches have tried to understand how different brain regions interact both in the context of complex cognitive processing and in a resting state. Interestingly, one of the recurrent findings is that the insular cortex has some coordinating function, particularly when analyzing the dorsal anterior insular activity. Various groups have been looking at the role of the dorsal anterior insular across different disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, and dementia a better understanding of this region is essential to understand brain dysfunction. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress 2022 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
