Rivalling the speed of the Messerschmitt Me 262, the BereznyakIsayev BI1 was an experimental step into the world of rocket powered fighters. Although the idea ultimately didn't catch on, and by the end of the war the turbojets had essentially won out the race, the brief window of rocket powered aircraft demonstrated unbelievable speed, unusual designs, and a generous smattering of unmistakeable mid century innovation.
