Did you know tsunamis generated in the Pacific or Indian oceans can approach our coastlines at the speed of a jetliner ✈ taking as little as two hours to reach us?
We explore the science behind our tsunami detection buoys—a critical component of BOM and Geoscience Australia's 24/7 tsunami warning system for the Australian community.
The buoys are located in three sites that are particularly prone to earthquakes: two in the Indian Ocean, close to the Sunda Trench; two in the Coral Sea, on the edge of the Pacific Plate; and two in the south Tasman Sea, close to the Puysegur Trench.
