Why are foreigners and experts leaving Singapore? While many people love Singapore, while can still proudly recommend the country as a place to love and live. But it can be surprising that many people don’t love living in Singapore. In spite of all the reasons to consider moving to Singapore as explained in our videos and a lot more, a good number of foreigners and expats are leaving Singapore for elsewhere, or returning to their countries. Aren’t you curious about this? In this video, we’re focusing on why foreigners are leaving Singapore. The country’s population has dropped by 4.1 per cent since 1950. And this is because expats and their families are leaving in droves. This video reveals the shocking truth about why foreigners are leaving Singapore.
What Is the Official Position?
The truth is that we can’t lay our hands on a precise official figure of the number of foreigners leaving the country. But we have a clue from figures from reliable sources. For example, Wikipedia reports that from 2000 to 2015, the number of Singaporeans relocating abroad increased to 314,281. But we’re exposing the shocking truth about why foreigners are leaving Singapore, not why Singaporeans themselves are travelling abroad. By the way, are Singaporeans actually leaving their country? Well, the Wikipedia source addresses Singaporeans in a generic sense factoring in those having permanent residency in the country.
Now, back to the question of whether Singaporeans are leaving their country. By 2019, there were 340,751 Singaporeans living in the diaspora, with 123,551 individuals holding other nationalities. Of course, this is human nature and may sometimes not be an indication that something is seriously wrong with the system. However, we have facts and experience showing big factors driving people, especially foreigners out of Singapore while some other countries cash in on those disadvantages, attracting both Singaporeans and expats living in the country. We can thus conclude that expats are leaving Singapore for the same reason as citizens.
Returning our focus to the official figures, we find this one from the Ministry of Manpower (MoM) quite instructive. It reports on the drop in the number of foreign residents categorized as professionals, managers, executives, and technicians (PMETs) saying the number has reduced since the pandemic started. From December 2019 to June 2021, according to the MoM, the number of EP holders in Singapore fell nearly 14 per cent, from 193,700 to 166,900. That appears to be the most reliable figure, laying to rest all speculation about whether foreigners and expats are leaving Singapore. But why are they leaving?
