Similar to the Sterling brand, the Merkur marque of the mid1980s was an attempt by Ford to introduce Europeansized models into the United States in order to directly combat the horde of BMWs, Audis, Hondas and Mercedes' filling up the market, but, like Sterling, would prove to be a massive failure for the company.
