No phase diagram is more important to materials scientists than the FeC phase diagram because it allows us to explain many of the different types of steels. The key area of the diagram is the eutectoid below which austenite converts to ferrite and cementite. The proeutectoid ferrite or cementite that forms will be surrounded by pearlite, bainite etc.
