Spetsnaz is a Russian term, typically associated with the special units of Russia, but other postSoviet states often refer to their special forces units by the term as well, such as Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

Historically, the name referred to special operational units controlled by the primary military intelligence service. However, it also described other task forces, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Emergency Situations' special rescue unit.

Because historically the term Spetsnaz, referred to not just Special Purpose Military Units, it can be a little tricky to date back to, where they first started.

In 1886, The Imperial Russian Army had huntercommando units, who saw combat in World War I, prior to the Russian Revolution in 1917.

The Spetsnaz were also involved in the Second World War… and, The Soviet war in Afghanistan in 1979. Along with tens of thousands of special ops and hostage situations,... including the Budyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis in 1995, and the Beslan school siege in 2004.


It wasn't until the late 1980’s, that the Soviet people were given access to many of their states secrets, on their countries special forces unit. This is due to many Russian state secrets being disclosed under the glasnost, or openness policy.

Since then, stories about the spetsnaz and their incredible expertise, has captivated the imagination, and hearts of many patriotic Russians. Although some of their tactics may be highly questionable at times, they have brought a lot of hope… particularly in the midst of the postSoviet era decay in military and security forces.


In 2015, to assist in the fight against terrorism on a global scale, five commandos were recruited by Team Rainbow.
These operators were Tachanka, Kapkan, Fuze, Glaz, and Finka.
