Venturing to an area I don't often tread, we now look east to the former Soviet Union, where in order to compete with the widebody airliners of the capitalist West, the USSR responded with the Ilyushin Il86, an airliner that on paper could have had potential, but was stymied by political and economic forces endemic to the communist nation, thereby ruining the chances of this formidable machine.
