Emboldened by its success against the Bohemian Revolt, Emperor Ferdinand now sought to press into the Protestant Heartland of Lower Saxony. The minor princes of the region looked to Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden and Christian IV of Denmark for protection. Christian, with backing from England, Scotland and the Netherlands, responded and declared war on 9th May, 1625.
