The Tramp and the Mattress Makers ( French: La Cardeuse de matelas ) is a 1906 comedy film by    • Georges Méliès   is film number 818820 in the Star Film catalog . The leading role, drunken tramp, is played by an extraordinary Manuel , a recurring actor in Méliès' films of this period. Manuel was also the only person whom Méliès instructed in the art of directing and who directed films for Star Film, a sign of the great trust he placed in him. And indeed, in this film, Méliès seems to set aside his tricks to give place to the actor and his game. Manuel's performance could be compared to those of Chaplin who so many times in the role of the drunken tramp.

Sinossi . On the street, three craftsmen are working on preparing a mattress; it is lunchtime and they decide to take a break in the tavern next door. (00:27) A drunkard (Manuel) arrives and, finding the mattress laid out for carding, settles down inside it to take a nap. (01:23) The workers return and get back to work, until the drunkard, sewn inside the mattress, wakes up and starts kicking (01:52) creating panic among passersby.
The man in the mattress manages to enter the tavern by jumping (02:13) causing those present to flee in fright. (02:41) A valiant gendarme intervenes to try to stop the possessed mattress, but in the confrontation the drunkard manages to break free and pin the officer under a pile of furniture. (02:55) Before escaping, the man takes advantage of the situation by carrying off a few valuable bottles from the unattended premises.
The film ends with the words (03:25) À votre santé Good Health Prosit!!! and with Manuel , shot in a halflength shot (03:30), toasting our health.
