In this video, I'll explain the process of becoming a U.S. citizen, answering the questions you might have. To apply for citizenship, you first need to become a green card holder, which can be achieved through various ways like marriage, family sponsorship, employment, asylum, and more. Once you have your green card, the wait time to apply for citizenship depends on whether you obtained it through marriage or other means.

If you obtained your green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen, you can apply for citizenship after three years as a green card holder. For others, the wait time is five years. USCIS wants to ensure your commitment to living in the U.S., so maintaining your green card for the required duration is crucial.

The physical presence requirement mandates that you must be in the U.S. for a specific period, either 30 months (for fiveyear applicants) or 18 months (for threeyear applicants). This requirement is strict, so make sure you meet it before applying.

Continuous residence is essential, as you cannot spend more than 180 days outside of the country per year. Exceptions apply, but be cautious to maintain your residency to avoid delays.

Having good moral character is a significant requirement. Certain criminal activities or noncriminal behaviors like not paying taxes or child support can affect your eligibility. USCIS may even revoke your green card if they discover issues during the naturalization process.

The stepbystep process for applying for citizenship includes submitting the N400 form, attending a biometrics appointment, participating in a citizenship interview and exam, receiving a decision, and finally, taking the oath of allegiance.

You can apply 90 days before meeting the residency requirement, but ensure you've lived in the same state for at least 90 days before applying. USCIS will schedule your interview, which includes an English test, writing exam, and civics test.

After the interview, you'll receive a decision within 120 days. If denied, you can appeal. The final step is the oath of allegiance, making you a U.S. citizen.

Overall, the naturalization process typically takes between 12 to 24 months, depending on various factors. Keep in mind that becoming a U.S. citizen has both pros and cons, so consider your situation carefully before applying!
