The Unluckiest Plane of WW2: Consolidated TBY Sea Wolf

IHYLS

In this video, we talk about the Consolidated TBY Sea Wolf, also known as the Vought TBU Sea Wolf, an earlytomid World War 2 torpedo bomber designed as a potential replacement to the Douglas TBD Devastator. We first talk about greenhouses and how the Sea Wolf looked like a greenhouse with wings. We then perfectly (not really) segue into early WW2 torpedo bombers, why the Devastator needed replacing, and the two models up selected to replace it: the Sea Wolf and the Grumman TBF Avenger. We compare the two models and look at how, on paper, the Sea Wolf was better.

We then look at how the Avenger ended up being the first adopted and what this meant for the Sea Wolf. We also look at the backtoback unlucky events the Sea Wolf experienced, being destroyed twice entirely by accident. We look at the Sea Wolf's eventual acceptance by the Navy and why despite this, it never went anywhere, largely because of Vought's lack of production capabilities. We end by imagining what may have happened if the Sea Wolf had decent luck and wasn't destroyed twice.
