Marvin Gaye spoke from the heart when he created “What’s Happening Brother”—a song about the challenges of coming home from Vietnam, recorded for the album What’s Going On (1971). Gaye based the lyrics on his brother Frankie’s experiences, described here in Frankie’s own words, and by noted film director, Sam Pollard.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Vietnam War 1945–1975.

How did the Vietnam War define a generation? In our groundbreaking exhibition "The Vietnam War: 19451975," the NewYork Historical Society examined the causes, progression, and consequences of one of the most controversial events of the 20th century. On view at NewYork Historical from October 4, 2017 – April 22, 2018.
