The Wangapeka track crosses Kahurangi National Park, from West Coast near Karamea to the Waimea Basin in the east.
It crosses two saddles, each of over 1,000 m, and travels through the beautiful beechforested valleys of the Little Wanganui, Taipo, Karamea and Wangapeka rivers. There is little traffic from Helicopter Flat hut to the west coast where the track is graded as a route. There are warm modern ten bunk huts situated approx a day's walk apart and shelters strategically placed either side of the Little Wanganui Saddle.
