Chris earned his golden ticket to the 2024 Western States 100 at The Black Canyon 100k in February with a stellar performance behind Hayden Hawks and Jupiter CareraCasas.

Western States has long been the pinnacle of ultra running. This historic trail race from Olympic Valley to Auburn is a pointtopoint 100mile foot race that takes participants through various trails that will test even the most experienced runner. Every year in December people worldwide wait in anticipation to find out if their name was drawn to take part in this prestigious race.

The race is limited to 369 runners every year, and for the 2024 lottery year, 9,388 individuals threw their names in the hat for a chance to race. For most people, the only way into the race is through this lottery. Every year if you wish to enter the lottery you must run a qualifying race, which there are many to choose from. Every year that you enter the lottery, your number of tickets doubles. In your first year, you have 1 ticket, in your second year, you have 2 tickets, then 4, and so on. Some people wait up to 8 years before their name is drawn.

For a more select group of runners, there are golden tickets your can earn to get into the race. These golden tickets are allocated to certain races each year, and for the top 2 runners, or 3 in some cases, on the men's and women's side at these specific races, they are able to gain entry into Western States.

Then on race day, the top 10 finishers are each invited back to race in next year's race, making a top 10 finish very soughtafter by the top runners in the field as it's the most direct way back into the race.
