Starting at Micklegate Bar, we take a clockwise route, passing St. Leonard's Hospital, York Oratory, York Minster, Clifford's Tower and cross both the River Foss and the River Ouse along the way.

Since Roman times York has been defended by walls of one form or another. To this day, substantial portions of the walls remain, and York has more miles of intact wall than any other city in England. The original walls were built around 71 AD, when the Romans erected a fort occupying about 50 acres or 21.5 hectares near the banks of the River Ouse.

The ruins of St. Leonard's Hospital was founded soon after the Norman Conquest and is was believed to be have been the largest medieval hospital in the north of England. The hospital also fed the poor and the condemned, providing meals for the prisoners in York Castle.

The Oratory Church of Saint Wilfrid, or York Oratory, is known as the 'Mother Church of the city of York'. It is in Gothic Revival style. The arch over the main door has the most detailed Victorian carving in the city. The present church was completed in 1864 and is considered to be one of the most perfectly finished Catholic churches in England, rich in sculptures, paintings and stained glass.

York Minster was formally known as the 'Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York' with the first record of a church built on that site dating back to 627 AD.

St. Michael Le Belfry was built between 1525 and 1537 and replaced a church that dated back to at least 1294. The church is famous for being the place where Guy Fawkes was baptised on April 16th 1570.

East Angle Tower Eboracum Roman Fort was a fort and later a city in the Roman province of Britannia. The site remained occupied after the decline of the Western Roman Empire and ultimately developed into the presentday city of York.

Merchant Taylor's Hall was built by the Fraternity of St John the Baptist (an organisation connected to the Taylors' Guild) in c.1415.

Clifford's Tower is a ruined keep of the medieval Norman York Castle which was built on the site of an even older castle built in 1068 following the Norman conquest of York.
