THERE WAS SO MUCH BLOOD | CALLED 911 TO OUR HOME

Sunny Side of Parenting

Hi all! I wish parents could take pain away from our children. If only we could suck it out of them like John Coffey in The Green Mile. Peter came down with a small cold over the week with a low fever, runny nose and a cough. He started getting bloody noses about three days into the cold. First they were very mild then significant. Thank goodness Adam was home to assist. I don’t handle blood well.

One of the most recent nose bleeds was unlike anything we’ve seen before. It didn’t stop. He was coughing up blood with chunks or either blood or mucus. The nose just continued to drip. I’d never seen so much blood. We were scared and called the nurse advice line who advised that we should call 911 to get the emergency response team to our home to check on him. At that point, Peter started losing his color. I’ve never called 911 before and I had hoped that I never would. Five minutes later we had a team of maybe five men in the loft with a gurney in the hall ready to take my little boy to the hospital. Once the emergency response team arrived, the nose bleed stopped! The team took his vitals and said that we should get him checked out. They offered to transport him or we could take him in ourselves. Since the nose stopped bleeding and the team was confident that Peter looks well enough to walk into the emergency room on his own, we decided to take him to the emergency room ourselves.

This was a very scary moment for us. We are confident parents, but when we see our children in pain, fear begins to creep in. We are grateful for the medical staff that has helped us when our children are sick and for their kind and reassuring words that help us replace the fear with confidence again.

Peter is much better now. He had a few nose bleeds in the following days, but they were all very minor.
