World premiere of 'There's Something Funky About Mary' commissioned for and performed at the 2011 New Zealand Woodwind Compositions. This piece was commissioned from composer David Hamilton by Mary O'Brien, director of the Competitions, and generously sponsored by Westlake Girls High School . The idea was to provide something that could be learnt quickly, able to include players of varying abilities, and incorporate some unconventional playing techniques. These young woodwind players were all competitors in the Competitions and took part in an hour long workshop with conductor Andrew Uren just prior to the Prizegiving Concert the first time they had seen this piece and the first time they have performed together as a group. A fantastic performance of a great new piece for junior ensemble!
