The break down of a substance into other simpler substances under the effect of heat is called thermal decomposition. When lead nitrate is heated in a test tube, a brownish yellow gas is formed which is heavier than air. The gas is nitrogen dioxide. The products of the reaction are lead oxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen.
